Mèinn / Ore: A source from which a valuable substance can be extracted. | A cultural source to be mined with care and value to be realised in the creative responses.
Creatives is seeking to publish creative works that explore the rich vein of cultural connection to the land from a Gaelic perspective; creative responses that recognise the role of the storyteller and of art in deepening our connection to the human ecology of the land, that speak to the ways in which the Gaelic language can enrich our understanding of places and lives, as well as the challenges and opportunities ahead of us.
Selected work will be published in our first printed Creatives publication, others will be published online. Work published in print will be remunerated at £100 per piece.
The working title of the print publication is Mèinn – the meaning of which encompasses the physical; ore, mine, vein of metal (mèinn airgid, silver ore; mèinn a liubhras òr, a mine that yields gold) as well as the reflective; mind, desire, temper | native quality or energy | love, fondness | discretion, clemency | expression (tha e nad mhèinn fhèin, it is left to your own clemency | am mèinn na gaoithe, to the mercy of the wind; talamh a bheir bàrr bho a mhèinn fhèin, land that produces crops of its own native energy; fo mhèinn, with the purpose of, having a mind to).
We welcome original Gaelic submissions of narrative essay, story, poetry, song, interview, art and photography that consider the following themes and may have local or broader focus:

comann – fellowship / community
aire – attention / regard
sgeul – story / tidings
Mèinn will be launched as part of our literature programme at the Fort William Mountain Festival in February 2024. Working with Raghnaid Sandilands, a Gaelic speaker and creative ethnologist, we hope to include a range of emerging and established creative voices in writing and illustration.
