Happy New Year! Two new books to kick off 2024

An update from General Manager, Rob, on a very exciting start to 2024 for Scottish Mountaineering Press with two book launches and our biggest presence yet at the Fort William Mountain Festival.

Happy New Year! We’re absolutely delighted to be starting the year with the news that we have two new books at the printers that we will be launching at the Fort William Mountain Festival in February 2024.

First up, we have a brand new edition of The Cairngorms & North-East Scotland. This hillwalkers’ guidebook, written by Iain Young, Anne Butler and Heather Morning, presents this much-loved area of Scotland like never before with superb photography, walking routes up all Munros, Corbetts and Grahams in the area, as well as insights into the natural and human history of the area.

It’s a book for those wanting a deeper appreciation of this unique region and encourages enjoyment at a slower pace, taking in everything that it has to offer.

Our second book Harold Raeburn: The Steps of a Giant, written by Peter J Biggar, presents an intimate profile of the father of Scottish mountaineering. Raeburn is a well-known name in the climbing community with classic routes spread across the whole country – many of which were decades ahead of their time and present a challenge even for the modern-day climber! He was involved in exploration around the world and can be considered a true legend of mountaineering.

We’ve events with the authors for both books running at the Fort William Mountain Festival, which runs from the 16–19 February, where you will be able to pick up copies and get your books signed.

The Press will have a bigger presence at the Festival this year with other events spanning workshops with two of our Creatives, a mountain running presentation with the author of one of our on-going projects, an evening event covering writing and art from Creatives and our Gaelic project Mèinn and a space – hosted with The Highland Bookshop – where you will be able to meet the team, see the winning work from our flash contests, pick up some extra reading and much more. We hope to see you there!

All of the above aside, we’d like to thank you for your continued support and the whole team here wish you all the best for 2024!
