The Race

a shudder, a deep breath of damp air –
go!
gravity pulls the finger-sized piece of wood
towards the dark water
chosen for thickness
a recognisable bend
and hopefully buoyancy.
wellingtons trample over the bridge.
we frantically scan with bright eyes
the white bubbles,
the moving light
the other debris
for a –
there’s mine! there’s mine! mine wins!

Creator’s biography

Kate is from a sleepy corner of Dumfriesshire in the South of Scotland. She lives with her husband, two toddlers, Douglas and Ruaridh, and Marble, the West Highland Terrier. Kate studied Scottish Literature and Scottish Ethnology at the University of Edinburgh where her loves of story and of Scotland combined. It was whilst living in Edinburgh that Kate began to explore the Highlands. She particularly enjoys, when time allows, walking up mountains with Marble. The landscape and weather help to provide inspiration for her poetry, which has previously been published in Southlight, Poetry Scotland, Sink Magazine and on the Black Nore Review. Kate writes when she has time between looking after her toddlers and working as a Primary School Teacher.
