Colours of the Cairngorms

Colour of the Cairngorms is a painting made from swatches of handmade natural pigments, made through a mixture of lake pigmentation reactions and ground material, which is then mixed with a binder to make watercolour paint, made from the plants, lichens and minerals that call the Cairngorms home. Each sample has a small comment on what it is, how it was processed and a comment to where the material was gathered from.

Runner up in the 2025 Creatives Flash Visual Art Contest, kindly supported by Fort William Mountain Festival and the Highland Bookshop.

Creator’s biography

Ellie is an ecologist, artist and mountain leader, based in the Cairngorms. She primarily works with watercolours, recently experimenting with creating natural pigments from the landscapes her paintings are inspired by. In her work, she looks to join together a sense of being in place with connectivity to the more than human world and hope for its future.
